Project information for lecturers

We would like to invite you to participate in a research project entitled ‘A cost-benefit investigation of the Englishization of higher education and the English medium instruction boom’. This project is led by Heath Rose (Department of Education, University of Oxford) with Jim McKinley (University of Bath) and aims to explore challenges and benefits of EMI in higher education.

Minimum involvement, which is all we’re asking at this point in the study, involves simply helping us to distribute an anonymous, voluntary online questionnaire (available in both Japanese and English) to students studying content in English (not English language courses). The questionnairetakes students about 10 minutes. The name of the student is not recorded, nor is the name of the university. If you would like to involve a lot of your students (we would need more than 30 student responses), we could provide you with a specialised report on your students' responses which could help to inform you of your students' unique language-related challenges. If you would like us to do this, please let us know, and we can tailor a special questionnaire link just for your students.

Below is a flyer that can be distributed by content instructors to their students. The flyer contains hyperlinks and QR codes to access the online questionnaire. That seems to work best when given to students in class as a handout, as they can access the questionnaire on their phones. When the students access the questionnaire study information sheet (and ethical information) is provided to them directly.  If this study is of interest, and if you would like to know more about it, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns.

Project information for students

We are looking for university students in Japan who take lectures in English. The survey is designed for students:
  • whose native language is not English
  • who take subject classes (for example business, economics, science, social studies, media, or medicine) in English.
If you complete the questionnaire you can enter a draw to win a 10,000 yen Amazon gift voucher. The winner will be selected on June 30th, 2018.

You can choose to take the questionnaire in Japanese or English.
