Institutions across the world are using English to teach academic subjects in a desire to internationalise. The symposium will present a global view of EMI with experts from different countries sharing their perspectives.

This will mark our 5th biennial symposium, having been held previously in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021. This event will be co-hosted by the EMI Research Group at the University of Oxford and The University of Hong Kong.  This year we have some exciting developments:
  • We plan to co-host the event with a simultaneous EMI symposium held at The University of Hong Kong, with plenary speakers in both locations and a joint panel discussion.
  • We will return to the structure of hosting a small selection of parallel talks, and plan to release a call for papers soon for those who would like to present their research in person.
  • While this is primarily an in-person conference, people will be able to register to watch the plenary talks online via Teams for free.

Confirmed Keynote Speakers

Picture
Professor Kristina Hultgren (Oxford-hosted plenary speaker)

Kristina Hultgren is Professor of Sociolinguistics and Applied Linguistics at The Open University, UK. She works on the internationalization and Englishization of universities in non-English-dominant countries, linking linguistics to the political economy. Kristina's work forges interdisciplinary collaborations in the intersection of linguistics and political science to uncover fundamental principles driving Englishization and its consequences for linguistic and social justice. She is Principal Investigator of ELEMENTAL, a large, collaborative, interdisciplinary, UKRI-funded project that seeks to trace the causal mechanism between past decades’ higher education governance reforms and English as a language of teaching in European higher education.

Professor Gwangwei Hu (Hong Kong-hosted plenary speaker)

Gwangwei Hu is Professor and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at The Polytechnic University of Hong Kong. He is an applied linguist by training and specializes in language and literacy education. His research consists of three related strands: (1) second language literacy education in English-as-a-foreign-language contexts;  (2) biliteracy acquisition in bilingual and ESL contexts; and (3) academic literacy. His research on academic literacy aims to capture the diversity and complexity of academic literacy practices and offers pedagogical insights and strategies for enhancing the disciplinary literacy of students at various levels of education.

Call for Abstracts - Oxford hosted event only

We are pleased to invite abstract submissions for the 5th English Medium Instruction (EMI) Symposium 2023, an international research symposium on topics related to EMI. The Symposium will take place at the Department of Education, University of Oxford on Wednesday 6th December, 2023. These submissions will be for parallel sessions to be held in the afternoon of the symposium, following the morning plenary sessions.

The English Medium Instruction (EMI) Symposium is a one-day symposium held every other year at the University of Oxford, Department of Education for students, researchers, and practitioners to convene and discuss the latest trends, experiences and findings in research on the teaching of academic subjects through English. The symposium invites keynote speakers to share their work on EMI, offering a global perspective with experts from different countries presenting on the realities of EMI in their local context. .

We invite students, researchers, and practitioners to submit abstracts for 20-minute presentations at the in-person symposium held in Oxford, comprised of a 15-minute presentation with a further 5 minutes for questions. (The presentations are shorter than the typical 20-25 minutes at many applied linguistics conferences, because a shared focus on EMI warrants less time needed to devote to situating the research within a broader literature, allowing presentations to jump quickly to their major findings and contributions). Submissions are welcome regardless of the stage of research, and presenters are invited to share ongoing work. The symposium offers a unique opportunity to present and discuss your research with EMI researchers, established academics, and practitioners from various countries.

Participants are encouraged to reflect on how their research relates to the theme, “Fostering collaboration,” and the following sub-themes:

  • higher education
  • policy making
  • pedagogy
  • content teaching & learning
  • language teaching & learning
  • assessment & evaluation
  • teacher training
  • primary and secondary education
  • challenges and difficulties
  • stakeholder attitudes, beliefs & motivation
  • teaching and learning strategies in EMI
  • classroom interaction
  • theory in EMI
  • language(s) in EMI

Abstracts no longer than 200 words are to be uploaded through the EMI Network website no later than 30 September 2023. We will notify presenters of successful submissions no later than 15 October 2023 and will assign your presentation to a panel session according to its theme.
